The Japanese Association of Language Teachers: Hokkaido Chapter
B. Bricklin Zeff will give a demonstration on using the free 3D life simulation platform Second Life. "Second Life"is a 3D online digital world. In this digital world it is possible to create and maintain "avatars" that represent people in "real life." These avatars are able to move around in this digital world and communicate in both text form and vocally using a microphone attached to the computer. Societies have been created in Second Life that follow accepted social norms that reflect real world communication and activities. Some environments are totally dedicated to English instruction and vocal participation is encourage for all communication. I will demonstrate how to join Second Life and to navigate to areas specifically for language learning. This will be a primer for the creator of a full interactive language learning area in Second Life to come up and give a workshop.
