Japanese learners of English face significant anxiety issues when giving speeches and presentations for classwork and for oral competitions. These issues are both internal (when learners are overly concerned with memorization and accuracy) and external (when learners face anxiety performing before an audience), and exacerbated when the teacher is involved through monitoring or feedback. While teacher-fronted instruction is necessary to teach the required grammar and organization for speeches and presentations, teachers would do well to also incorporate pair and group work into practice activities to lessen learner anxiety and ensure greater gains among learners.

This presentation will focus on activities aimed at fluency development and mastery of the speech and presentation forms common in oral communication classes. These activities were created to minimize learner anxiety while ensuring learner accountability to task compliance. The audience will be asked to participate in these activities and discuss their potential effectiveness in their classrooms.

発表概要

日本人の英語学習者は授業および口頭発表のコンテストにおいてスピーチやプレゼンテーションを行う際に、著しく不安に関する問題を抱える。こうした不安の問題は内的（暗記と正確さを過度に心配する場合）かつ外的（人前で発表をすることを不安に思う場合）なものであり、教師による観察やフィードバックを受けることでさらに悪くなる。スピーチやプレゼンテーションについて、必要な文法および文の構成について教師が講義式に指導することは不可欠である一方、ペアやグループワークの活動を通じて練習させることで、学習者の不安が減少し多くの学びにつなげることもできる。

本発表は、オーラルコミュニケーションのクラスでよく用いられる、流暢さの向上とスピーチとプレゼンテーションの形式を習得することを目的としたアクティビティを中心に取り上げる。これらのアクティビティは学習者の不安をできるだけ軽減しつつ、タスクをこなす際に学習者がしなければならないことを明確にするものである。参加者はアクティビティに参加し、授業における実用性について議論する。

Bio:

Roehl Sybing is an Associate Instructor at Nanzan Junior College in Nagoya, Japan. He has a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from New York University, and has taught English throughout Japan since 2004. His research interests include culture and learner perspectives in language education.
