The mathematics of vocabulary frequency will highlight how many words and meanings are to be learnt and at what speed. This has implications for how much text needs to be met and how frequently. We will then look at what type of words need to be met and at the best way to acquire not only the form-meaning relationship of words but also deeper aspects of vocabulary acquisition. A review of how our courses are typically structured and taught will reveal some severe misconceptions about the learning task facing our learners, not only in terms of numbers of words to be learnt, but also in terms of building fluent, automatic receptive and productive control over them. It will be shown that extensive reading and listening has massive enabling effects on vocabulary acquisition and helps to develop a stable and reliable sense of how language is put together. He is Professor at Notre Dame Seishin University in Okayama, Japan. He is an Executive Board member of the Extensive Reading Foundation. It can put powerful tools like an interactive dictionary, character lists, and audio-on-demand, right at their fingertips. Additionally, online extensive reading allows teachers to monitor and track their students’ reading progress. Teachers can know which books their students have selected, how many words they read, and even their reading speed. Finally, because of all of the rich reading data that can be collected, online extensive reading is ideal for academics interested in doing research on extensive reading. In this presentation, the speaker, who developed Xreading, a commercial website that provides students with unlimited access to hundreds of graded readers from major publishers such as OUP, CUP, and Cengage, will explain how teachers can get the most out of using online extensive reading with their classes, and give a demonstration of the Xreadingsystem. His main areas of interest include extensive reading and extensive listening.
